The name Arthur Mays is well known and well respected in the local community of Westbury, Wiltshire and surrounds as belonging to a marvellous and special man – described by a former Mayor of the town as “a true professional and a true gent”.
Mr Mays was a funeral director in the town for more than 60 years, and was still active in the business that bears his name when he died in 2017 at the age of 92.
I, Anthony Adams, took the bold step of taking on the running of Arthur W Mays Funeral Directors a few years ago after Arthur – who was like a grandfather to me – was persuaded to take a step back because of ill health (although he never fully retired!).
Fortunately, I’m ably assisted by my brothers, Trevor, Stephen and Martin, and the indomitable Simon Smith who has worked at the company for more than 35 years.
Old Arthur was my Godfather and our next-door neighbour in Gibbs Close, Westbury, while I was growing up. We were practically family, and I and my brothers learned the business from him, so we are delighted to be able to keep the funeral business running in his name, continuing to build on its well-established reputation for caring, compassion, kindness and fair pricing.
Besides learning the ins and outs of the undertaking business as a trade from Arthur, I and my brothers also learned how important it is to provide emotional support to the bereaved families who come to us to arrange their loved ones’ funerals. We deal with people who are experiencing a very sad and traumatic time in their lives, and we know that a caring attitude should form the basis of all the services we provide. We always have time to talk, and to listen.
When it comes to services – we organise funerals efficiently and competently according to the clients’ wishes, making all arrangements and managing the event itself. We take care of all the details for our bereaved clients, so they don’t have to worry and can just concentrate on saying a fond farewell to their loved one.
We confidently believe that we can continue the decades-old tradition established by Arthur Mays of providing an essential service in the Westbury area with dignity and professionalism. The many testimonials and endorsements we receive from the families of those we have laid to rest tell us we are doing a worthy job.
When a death occurs, contact Arthur W Mays Funeral Directors as soon as possible so that we can offer support. You might also want to contact us to arrange a pre-paid funeral plan to give you peace of mind knowing that your funeral arrangements are organised ahead of your demise.
